What is ISO 14122-3-General requirements for stairs, stepladders, and guardrails about?
ISO 14122 is a European standard on the permanent means of access to machinery for the safety of machinery. ISO 14122-3 discusses the requirements for stairs, stepladders, and guardrails.
ISO 14122-3 is the third part of the multi-series of documents that specifies requirements for non-powered stairs, stepladders, and guard-rails which are a part of a stationary machine, and to the non-powered adjustable parts (e.g., foldable, slidable) and movable parts of those fixed means of access.
This part of ISO 14122 specifies minimum requirements that also apply when the same means of access is required as the part of the building or civil construction (e.g., stairs, stepladders, guard-rails) where the machine is installed, on condition that the main function of that part of the construction is to provide a means of access to the machine.
Note1: ISO 14122-3 does not apply to powered means of access such as lifts, escalators, or other devices specially designed to lift persons between two levels.
Note2: “Fixed” means of access are those mounted in such a manner (for example, by screws, nuts, welding) that they can only be removed using tools.

ISO 14122-3 on the general requirements for stairs, stepladders, and guardrails are useful for:
- Machine manufacturers (small, medium, and large enterprises)
- Machine employers (small, medium, and large enterprises)
- Machine employees (e.g., trade unions, organizations for people with special needs)
- Service providers, e.g., for maintenance (small, medium, and large enterprises)
Why should you use ISO 14122-3-General requirements for stairs, stepladders, and guardrails?
Machines can improve production efficiency in the workplace. However, their moving parts, sharp edges, and hot surfaces can also cause serious workplace injuries such as crushed fingers or hands, amputations, burns, or blindness. Safeguards are essential to protect workers from injury.
ISO 14122-3 provides you with general requirements, design and construction for the structure and the steps, specific requirements applicable to stairs, specific requirements applicable to step ladders, and much more.
The requirements provided by ISO 14122-3 assist in improving the performance of stairs, stepladders, and guardrails and ensuring the protection to end-users against risks of slipping, tripping, or falling, and any machinery injuries.
With obedience and compliance to ISO 14122-3, you can enhance the efficiency of stairs, stepladders, and guardrails to manufacture a standardized product of global acceptance in the market.
