BS EN 12845:2015
What is this standard about?
BS EN 12845 outlines recommendations for the purchase, design, installation, operation and maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems in buildings and industrial plants.
Who is this standard for?
It will be of interest to those who purchase, design, install, test, inspect, approve, operate and maintain automatic sprinkler systems so that they function as intended throughout their life. Specifically, the standard will be used by:
- Architects
- Fire safety engineers
- Fire and rescue services
- Fire risk assessors
- Building control
- Installers of fire and smoke alarms
- Certification and installation scheme inspectors
Why should you use this standard?
The guidance given in BS EN 12845 helps ensure that sprinkler systems function as intended throughout their lifecycle and contribute towards the protection of life.
The standard covers the classification of hazards, provision of water supplies, components to be used, installation and testing systems, plus the maintenance and the extension of existing systems. It also identifies construction details of buildings which are the minimum necessary for satisfactory performance of sprinkler systems complying with this standard.
What's changed since the last update?
This is the UK implementation of EN 12845:2015 incorporating corrigendum January 2016.
The standard was revised within its systematic five-year review, but it also needed further technical revision to align with changes to the Construction Product Regulations.
The changes have taken some time in development and the UK committee feels it may not reflect current sprinkler technology and practice. National Annex NA identifies some areas of concern and also provides guidance and material related to UK practice.Â
