What is this standard about?

This European standard supplies technical delivery conditions for bright steel bars that are usually intended for mechanical purposes, typically machine parts.

Who is this standard for?

  • Wire manufacturers and stockists
  • Spring manufacturers and stockists
  • Bright steel bar manufacturers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Machine part manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Purchasing staff
  • Quality engineers and managers

Why should you use this standard?

It specifies the technical delivery requirements for bright steel bars in the drawn, peeled/turned or ground condition and intended for mechanical purposes, for example machine parts. The bright bars are subdivided into the following steel types:

  1. Non-alloy general engineering steels
  2. Non-alloy free-cutting steels
  3. Non-alloy and alloy case-hardening steels
  4. Non-alloy and alloy steels for quenching and tempering

This standard lists the mechanical characteristics for products up to 100 mm in thickness. For larger dimensions, the manufacturer and purchaser agree on mechanical properties at the time of enquiry and order.

It does not cover cold rolled products and cut lengths produced from strip or sheet by cutting. Bright steel products of stainless steels are to be found in BS EN 10088-3.

In addition to this standard, the general technical delivery requirements of BS EN 10021 apply.

What's changed since the last update?

This European standard replaces parts 1-5 of BS EN 10277:2008. The update was to reflect changes made to BS EN ISO 683-18 and the 2018 updates to BS EN ISO 683-1 to -4.
