Slating and tiling for pitched roofs and vertical cladding. Code of practice
Description

Official BSI Distributor

What is this standard about?

The first guidance of its kind in the market, this standard sets out good practice in roof slating and tiling. It will help users comply with current regulations and industry standards in this area.

Who is this standard for?

  • Designers
  • Specifiers
  • Manufacturers of pitched roofing materials
  • Installers of pitched roofing materials
  • Roofing trade associations

Why should you use this standard?

It provides recommendations on the design, performance and installation of new-build pitched roofs, including vertical cladding, using slates, tiles, shingles and shakes and their associated components. It also covers normal re-roofing work, including repairs.

It will help users comply with current regulations and industry standards, e.g.:

  • Building Regulations
  • Competent Roofer - the Government-licenced scheme that allows professional roofing contractors to self-certify that their roof refurbishment work complies with building regulations within England and Wales
  • NHBC Technical Standards - The National Housing Building Council is an independent regulator for the new homes industry and the largest single approved inspector of building regulations

NOTE 1: This British Standard does not cover the structural design of the roof.

NOTE 2: The recommendations contained in this British Standard may not be appropriate for the re-slating or re-tiling of some old roofs, particularly where traditional and/or reclaimed materials are used. Users intending to adopt any of these recommendations for old roofs, and especially for historically or architecturally important buildings, are advised to consult with the local planning authority or an appropriate conservation organization to check their suitability.

What's changed since the last update?

This is the second amendment. It makes the following changes:

  • Clarifies the scope of the standard in relation to old and heritage roofs
  • Addresses ongoing sitework issues relating to the permissible drape of unsupported roof underlays, their product testing and classification for wind uplift resistance
  • Improves interpretation of test results from the test method to determine the uplift resistance of mechanical fasteners for roof tiles, leading to more accurate fixing specifications
  • Makes minor corrections and updates references, including to a new standard: BS 8612:2018 - Dry-fixed ridge, hip and verge systems for slating and tiling Specification
  • Supports BS 8000-6:2013 Workmanship on building sites. Code of practice for slating and tiling of roofs and walls.
